In giorni come oggi ...

credo che il posto dove vivo è davvero il più bello al mondo. Abbiamo fatto un brunch sul tardi sul balcone - il 7 dicembre ... che giornata :-) be' dall'altro lato: manca un po' l'atmosfera natalizia dei mercatini di Natale in Germania ... e vabbe' non si può mica avere tutto.

Wikipedia - BBC - viral marketing (in italiano)

Be' non poteva non succedere prima o poi: qualcuno aggredisce Wikipedia di fare marketing virale. A mio avviso una stupidagine vera e propria, perché poi anche le pagine su Ferrari, Fiat, Armani, Pc-Man (tuttora in commercio sotto varie forme) ecc. sarebbero da considerare tale. L'unica cosa che wikipedia ha di fronte alle enciclopedie "cartacee" o "normali": è molto più veloce, be' wiki significa proprio quello: veloce. Gli altri magari aspettano anni prima di inserire una nuova voce - su Wikipedia questo succede immediatamente, cioè poi quando qualcuno ritiene quel argomento "interessante" e ne vuole e può scrivere.

A parte che su wikipedia è stato già modificato più volte la'articolo e quindi la nota di Shen Ming Xuan sulla lista di discussione in italiano sul "che cosa può succedere ad un articolo su wikipedia" ormai si è avverata:

"Non credo che questa forma di "pubblicità occulta" sia interessante per le grandi e medie aziende: affinchè non venga rimosso quasi immediatamente, il messaggio dovrebbe essere molto pacato, senza esagerazioni o slogan. E non ci sarebbe nessuna garanzia che resti com'è e non venga modificato o addirittura stravolto da successivi interventi. Sarebbe troppo aleatorio, e il tentativo potrebbe perfino ritorcersi contro di loro, provocando (come mi pare sia successo per la BBC che di sicuro non ci fa una gran figura) un contraccolpo mediatico negativo. Insomma rischierebbero molto più di quanto potrebbero guadagnare. No, non credo ci sia da preoccuparsi molto... "

Quello che fa l'autore dell'articolo su macitynet.it è proprio quello che lui stesso ufficialmente disprezza: e lui che fa "sapere" che esiste questo articolo. Con la quantità di articoli presenti su wikipedia di fatti è improbabile che si vede proprio quell'articolo nelle "Ultime modifiche" (Recent changes). Quindi chi è il vero autora del viral marketing in questo caso è l'autore dell'articolo: Antonio Dini, che punta l'attenzione dei suoi lettori proprio su quella pagina. A proposito il link a BoingBoing e l'articolo originale in inglese (che a mio avviso dovrebbe essere quello che ha fatto conoscere quella pagina al pubblico) non funziona.

Wikipedia funziona - l'articolo è stato adattato e hanno votato per la permanenza. Credo che ne abbiano anche discusso sul chat Wikipedia in inglese - solitamente lo fanno (e se no, pazienza).

È un peccato che non c'è l'opzione "commenta questo articolo" sul sito. L'avrei fatto volentieri.

wkimania (1) and other stuff

This week wikimania will take place ... five days. I really would have liked to go there, but it was not possible - the twins, my husband working and of course I am working as well. So at a certain stage I told myself that in the end I can help with translations and participate that way.

Then, some days ago talking with SJ he asked me if I could help with the organising of the translations. Aphaia who did a real good job cannot go ahead. So of course I said I could ... now I am here with a list of translators who are so great people and told me that they are going to help me with this very particular job. It is a non-profit job for all of us. But back to the organisation - for now I don't have a clue of which rhythm there will be, how much work will come over and how we can cover all translations and possibly also proof reading. All that just before the event ... yes, I am getting a bit nervous. I'll keep you updated here.

Besides that there were some great news related to ultimate wiktionary, but how could I write all that in such a short time? This is difficult, really... maybe I'll just wait a bit and tell step by step - anyway there will be hundreds of news during the next days.

We are also very curious to which extend we will be able to co-operate with Logos (www.logos.it).

Another thing that happened during the last days had to do with nds (Low Saxon in English if I remember well) - people on that wiktionary have a problem with a list that was created out of texts by Werner and that I wanted to upload there.

Now since they had these problems with me I decided to add Italian to the translations and simply upload it to the Italian wiktionary. I am also in contact with the Institut für niederdeutsche Sprache - they will in some way help me to categorise the words we have and of course add more content to the list we already have.

Tradurre testi pubblicitari

Ho appena consegnato un lavoro - script pubblicitari per una delle case automobilistiche italiane. Non lo so se posso menzionare qui chi sia e quindi evito a menzionare il nome. Mai prima una traduzione l'ho sentita tanto "mia". Scrivere dell'autovettura del cuore, pensare all'effetto che avrà sui potenziali clienti. Pensare ai minimi particolari - nel senso "invertire una frase o lasciarla in quella sequenza" - in fine dice la stessa cosa, ma come sentimento è diversa.

Ho sempre sostenuto che per tradurre testi pubblicitari si deve conoscere molto bene il proprio cliente, si deve "sentirsi" parte dell'azienda anche se non si è lì. Talvolta è difficile raggiungere questo punto, in particolare quando queste traduzioni si fanno per un'agenzia (come ho fatto spesso prima) - questo qui era un cliente diretto ed è importante sentire l'entusiasmo anche dall'altro lato. E allora anche gli orari più particolari non danno alcun fastidio, anzi, si ha più tempo e tranquilità in quegli "orari strani".

Viene messa sul mercato in un periodo difficile, cioè l'economia tedesca non va un gran che - ci saranno le elezioni anticipate proprio in quel periodo - ma d'altro canto il tipico cliente target è amante dell'Italia - sicuramente ha la sua macchina di caffé espresso tipo "bar" a casa ed in ufficio. Ama una buona bottiglia di vino, preferibilmente proveniente dalla Toscana dove volentieri passa anche le sue vacanze. La cena nel ristorante italiano di alto livello è un must.

Be' volevo soltanto dirlo a "qualcuno" - è raro che una traduzione lascia un "segno" tanto profondo.

Wiktionary - Ultimate Wiktionary - e quando tutto ha avuto inizio

È l'una di notte - ho appena finito di parlare con Gerard Meijssen di Ultimate Wiktionary, Eurodicautom e Iate e un altro paio di cosette. Parlando mi è venuto in mente che ora è quasi un anno da quando abbiamo iniziato a parlare sul "come evitare doppio lavoro e cercare di migliorare la qualità di wiktionary" ... sono andata a vedere: diciamo che la data dell'inizio che poi ha portato all'idea dell'Ultimate Wiktionary è il 31 agosto 2004.

E a pensare che ora Eric sta programmando il software per realizzarlo. A pensare che un organizzazione grande (kennisnet.nl) del settore educativo semplicemente hanno dato 5000 Euro per la programmazione, a pensare che un sogno di tanti anni si sta avvicinando sempre di più alla realtà .... be' sì che lascia un sentimento particolare e strano.

Da un lato abbiamo quelli che "sperano che sia la soluzione del futuro" e dall'altro ci sono quelli che "sperano che non riuscirà". Noi sappiamo che funzionerà, certo, all'inizio ci saranno ancora dei problemi come tutte le cose che si avviano, ma diventerà meglio con ogni difficolta che incontreremo e risolveremo.

Giusto oggi abbiamo notato che la versione "di prova" con il glossario (o meglio tesauro multilingue) di GEMET, cioè dell'European Environmental Agency, sarà online in Agosto - cioè giusto un anno dopo l'inizio dei nostri primi colloqui - e se siamo fortunati sarà pronto per Wikimania a Francoforte a inizio agosto ...

Tante coincidenze ci hanno aiutato, tante discussioni, tante considerazioni tra due persone che di base sono molto diverse ma che hanno una meta in comune: mettere a disposizione di tutti tutte le parole in tutte le lingue con definizioni, etimologia, pronuncia, traduzioni, relazioni, esempi, sinonimi, immagini ecc. ecc. ecc.

Lo so è un progetto quasi troppo ambizioso - molti diranno "ma questi sono matti da legare" - invece non credo ... immaginate che p.e. una lista di parole con ortografia corretta in olandese contiene 220.000 parole. Immaginate se ci fossero 1000 traduttori (malappena metà degli iscritti di langit) che traducono solo una parola al giorno ... per avere tutti i 220.000 parole tradotte ci vorrebbero 220 giorni ... e poi pensiamo che per ogni lingua ci potessero essere queste 1000 persone ... e poi pensiamo che dopo aver inserito le traduzioni aggiungono un sinonimo al giorno o una definizione al giorno ... nel giro di pochi anni si avrebbe il dizionario più completo in assoluto - e anche: multilingue.

A tutto ciò si aggiunge una futura integrazione diretta in un CAT-Tool come OmegaT - cioè chi lavora con OmegaT potrà accedere direttamente ai dati di wiktionary - cioè come glossario strutturato in categorie (generale, tecnica, medicina, diritto ecc. ecc.) come aiuto di traduzione e direttamente dall'interno di OmegaT inserisce nuovi termini in quella categoria che poi saranno di nuovo a disposizione di tutti. E tutto ciò con un processo di sicurezza qualità (che abbiamo già in mente - deve essere ancora un po' raffinato). Inoltre attraverso i suoi contributi ogni traduttore riceve l'attribuzione delle relative modifiche e aggiunte che fa e quindi automaticamente crea una certa reputazione per un determinato campo. Be' anche a quello si deve pensare: Ultimate Wiktionary può essere uno strumento di marketing in quanto attraverso le aggiunte si può vedere chi è specializzato in che cosa.

Sì, è la via giusta - quasi ci siamo - e tutti voi che leggete questo blog siete invitati a farne parte.

The reason for not too many definitions on European wiktionaries

People from the English wiktionary in particular often say that the European ones are only full of stubs as they lack in definitions, synonyms, antonyms etc.

I was thinking about this today as I thought there must be a reason and yes, there is a very obvious reason.

When you live in an English only world most of all you do not need to know other languages to communicate since many people in the world speak enough English to be able to communicate.

When you live in Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands etc. instead the need of communication with other languages is much higher and this leads to a completely different perception of wiktionary. People see it as help during their everyday communication and since communication in Europe is made of translations you have plenty of translations and less defintions.

People add to wiktionary what is important for them from their cultural point of view and not from the other's point of view.

There are also other reasons.

Some time ago I also had an interesting conversation with Dave from the Ido wiktionary (http://io.wiktionary.org). People on the discussion list were reacting strange to their uploading huge translation wordlists. But: why did they? For the Ido language these lists and the possibility to have them searchable is one of the most important things. There are lists online, but you need to search in different places and you cannot add. So having wiktionary and being able to add in particular translations for them is very important.

What we should consider with any project: people add what is important for them, what they would like to find and so it is quite clear that translations are a huge part of that.

Definitions are important, of course, but they are just a part of the existing contents and not the main thing for everyone.

Personally being a translator what I need most are of course translations. Another thing that would help a lot are images. One example for technical translations: time ago we translated a CAD-Software and within this software we had long lists of different screws, bolts, etc. Sometimes we needed quite a long time to figure out which one was which one in which language. A dictionary with multiple translations showing the screws etc. would have helped a lot.

So please: from now on consider translations as important as they really are - and those of you who can add photos and images: add them at commons and link them to wiktionary as well.

Consider also: language students often use wiktionary - so create soundfiles ad add them - it helps them to learn a language.

SUN's XLIFF Translation Editor compared to OmegaT

I just wanted to try it out ... and I had huge problems - the SUN tool does not work like it should according to the manual.

Here are my experiences/is my opinion:

Definitely: OmegaT is better than Xliff translation editor - the SUN tool is much too immature - I had to create a project us-EN to DE to be able to load the text-file (it was not possible to create a project with Italian as source language). Soft returns are not interpeted well (at least the title was mixed with the first sentence of the text). Generally speaking the segmentation does not really work well - there's no way to join segments to be able to work on a normal sentence. SUN should take OmegaT for their localisation work and hepl with internal segmentation + spellchecking + creating a glossary function - the SUN tool lacks even in this (glossary tool). So much money invested for that tool ... but how to tell this SUN? What I prefer is the way the translation units are shown in the SUN-Tool, but all the rest does not make me happy at all. A combination of both would be great.

Coding OpenOffice.org files with the XLIFF filter was not possible even if a "normal" OpenOffice.org file (I tried files of version 1.1 and 2.0beta). Something I can easily do with OmegaT - it opens OOo-files without an external conversion tool and therefore it is much easier to handle than the XLIFF Translation Editor.

Being presented as a "SUN inhouse tool that is used" I expected it to be much better and now I feel a bit disappointed ...

Definitely there is a lot to do - and combining forces would be the best thing to my opinion.

One thing has to be considered: the license the two tools use are different - but this should not be a hurdle I believe if people really want to co-operate.
